Certified Phlebotomy Technician
Program Description:
The Certified Phlebotomy Technician is a 130-clock-hour Program. The course is instructed by a licensed nurse who is also a Nationally Certified Phlebotomist and Certified Clinical Medical Assistant. The Certified Phlebotomy Technician course is a specialized training program designed to prepare individuals for a career in healthcare as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician. This course typically covers all essential skills and knowledge required to safely and effectively draw and collect Blood Specimens from patients for medical testing, transfusions, donations, or research safely and effectively. The Certified Phlebotomy Technician course will also teach students to collect Nonblood specimens. The Key topics include anatomy and physiology, blood collection techniques, proper handling and labeling of specimens, infection control, patient interaction, safety procedures, communication, and legal and ethical issues. In this course, Students engage in classroom instruction and hands-on Skills practice in a Skills Laboratory and hands-on clinical practice in a hospital or clinic setting.
Upon completion, the graduates are eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) and pursue entry-level positions in hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and other healthcare settings.

Admission Requirements:
- Fill out an Application either online or in person.
- Complete the Enrollment Agreement in person or electronically.
- Minimum age: 18 Years.
- High School Diploma, GED, or another Equivalency, or higher.
- Current Government-issued Photo ID: e.g., driver’s license, passport, military card, green card, work authorization card, or tribal card
- Social Security Card or replacement letter from the Social Security Administration’s office.
- Criminal Background Screening. (Offered at MedNoc for a cost of $35.00).
- Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test (PPD Test). (Offered at MedNoc for a cost of $35.00).
- Current BLS from American Heart Association required. (Offered at MedNoc for a cost of $60.00).
- Drug Test. (Offered at MedNoc for a cost of $50.00).
- During Flu Season, a Flu shot record may be required before attending clinical.
***NOTE: Some clinical sites may require additional requirements such as drug screens, immunization records, flu shots during flu season, or wearing a mask at the clinical site. The school will inform you if any of these items are required on the day of enrollment.
Phlebotomy Technician Course Objectives:
- Legal Considerations:
- Learn about the legal aspects of phlebotomy, including patient rights, informed consent, and the legal ramifications of improper procedures and negligence.
- Ethical Conduct:
- Understand ethical principles in healthcare, including honesty, integrity, and adherence to ethical guidelines to ensure patient welfare and trust.
- Understanding Anatomy and Physiology:
- Gain knowledge of the circulatory system, particularly veins and arteries, to identify suitable blood draw sites.
- Blood Collection Techniques:
- Master various blood collection methods, including venipuncture, capillary puncture, and arterial puncture.
- Specimen Handling and Processing:
- Learn proper techniques for labeling, handling, and transporting blood specimens to ensure accuracy and prevent contamination.
- Infection Control and Safety:
- Understand and implement infection control practices and safety protocols to protect both patients and healthcare workers.
- Patient Interaction and Communication:
- Develop effective communication skills to interact with patients, alleviate their concerns, and provide clear instructions during the blood draw process.
- Equipment Use and Maintenance:
- Familiarize with phlebotomy equipment, including needles, syringes, collection tubes, safety devices, and proper maintenance and disposal.
- Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance:
- Learn about quality assurance practices, regulatory standards, and legal and ethical considerations in phlebotomy.
- Emergency Procedures:
- Be prepared to respond to complications or emergencies, such as fainting or adverse reactions during blood collection.
- Professionalism and Ethics:
- Understand the importance of maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical behavior in all interactions and procedures.
- Certification Preparation:
- Prepare for national certification exams through a review of key concepts and practice tests.
National Certification Examination:
After completing the Phlebotomy Technician training program at MedNoc Training College, the student will be required to take the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam, a National Certification Exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). The exam will be offered at MTC.
CPT National Certification Exam Details:
- 100 questions, 20 pretest questions.
- Exam time: 2 hours.
- Pass: 390 out of 500 is a passing score in a scaled scoring system.
